Newmarket Courthouse Expansion Addresses Caseload Growth
The Newmarket Courthouse. also known as the Central East Courthouse. serves York Region and handles civil, criminal, family, and small claims matters, in addition to housing the Crown Attorney’s office and Victim and Witness Services. For years the facility drew criticism for being overcrowded relative to the volume of cases heard there. The Ontario Attorney General’s office responded by introducing the Justice on Target program, which aimed to reduce average case timelines by 30 percent. Expansion of the physical facility at 50 Eagle Street West in Newmarket was also pursued to address growing demand. For anyone with a court date in York Region, the Newmarket Courthouse is the central location for most criminal and driving matters in the area. Arriving early and bringing all court documents is essential.
